Sandip Patel, the Managing Director of IBM (NYSE:IBM) India/South Asia, recently emphasized India's significant role in the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. He highlighted the government's openness to partnering with the industry to advance AI technology responsibly and scale up skills in this domain.
Speaking to IANS, Patel underscored the importance of establishing India as a hub for AI adoption and innovation on a global scale to achieve self-reliance ("Atmanirbhar") in AI technology.
"While progress is being made, there is scope to accelerate India's AI story by connecting the dots between different domains -- policy making, investments that are going into AI, skilling, and R&D," Patel stated. He emphasized the need for responsible AI development and deployment, emphasizing the importance of research and development (R&D) efforts in this regard.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also emphasized the government's commitment to leveraging AI for social development and inclusive growth. Initiatives like the 'National Programme on Artificial Intelligence' and the upcoming AI mission in Bharat aim to promote AI applications in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education.
Patel highlighted the government's plans to establish centers of excellence (CoEs) in the AI space across various domains, emphasizing the practical applications of AI technology to drive real-world impact.
According to the 'IBM Global AI Adoption Index 2023,' approximately 59% of enterprise-scale organizations in India are actively using AI in their businesses. Early adopters have accelerated their investments in AI, particularly in areas like R&D and workforce re-skilling.
AI and automation have the potential to add up to $500 billion to India's GDP by 2025, according to a recent Nasscom study. Patel emphasized that India has a significant stake in the AI revolution, but challenges remain, including the need for skilled talent and addressing ethical concerns around AI adoption.
IBM has committed to training two million learners globally in AI by the end of 2026. Patel stressed the importance of adopting responsible AI practices supported by proper governance to set the standard for AI innovation in India and globally.
As India continues to navigate the AI landscape, partnerships between the government and industry players like IBM will play a crucial role in driving responsible AI adoption and unlocking the full potential of AI technology for societal benefit.
