Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), commented on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and cryptocurrencies during her speech last week at the Atlantic Council in Washington D.C.
While mentioning that we are in the early days for CBDCs and not quite sure know how far and how fast they will go, Georgieva said that CBDCs can offer more resilience, more safety, greater availability, and lower costs than unbacked crypto assets. She added that even stablecoins, being better managed and regulated, are no match for stable and well‑designed CBDCs.
