Byrna Technologies (NASDAQ: BYRN) Navigates Q3 Financial Headwinds in Less-Lethal Self-Defense Market

  • Mixed Q3 Financials: Byrna Technologies (NASDAQ: BYRN) reported a narrower-than-expected loss per share but missed revenue estimates for its fiscal third quarter.
  • Significant Revenue Decline: The company experienced a substantial 46% year-over-year revenue drop, shifting from net income to a net loss compared with the prior-year quarter.
  • Strategic Responses: Management attributes the decline to various sales channels and is implementing strategies, including the acquisition of HERO Defense Systems, to improve performance and drive future revenue growth.

Byrna Technologies (NASDAQ: BYRN), a key player in the less-lethal self-defense products market, recently released its fiscal third-quarter financial performance. The company reported a loss of $0.13 per share, which was narrower than the $0.16 loss expected in initial estimates. However, revenue for the quarter stood at $15.3 million, falling short of the $16.3 million estimate.

This revenue miss was accompanied by a significant year-over-year decline in the company's financial performance. Revenue fell 46% from $28.2 million reported a year earlier. Byrna also recorded a net loss of $2.9 million, compared with net income of $2.2 million in the prior-year quarter. Furthermore, its adjusted EBITDA, a measure of earnings before certain expenses, shifted from positive $4.1 million to negative $1.4 million, highlighting the challenges in its recent quarterly earnings report.

Further analysis, as highlighted by Zacks Investment Research, indicated an expected loss of $0.15 per share. Byrna's adjusted loss of $0.13 per share beat this estimate as well. While these analyst estimates for loss per share varied, both confirmed a smaller per-share loss than anticipated, even as revenue continued to fall short of projections.

CFO Lauri Kearnes attributed the revenue decline primarily to several factors, including lower online sales, slower reorders from dealers and chain stores, and weaker retail sales to customers. In response to these challenges, Byrna is working on strategies to improve online purchases and overall store performance. The company also expanded its product offerings and market reach through the acquisition of HERO Defense Systems, aiming to introduce products at more price points and in diverse formats to support its market position and future revenue growth.
