Severe storms earlier this week have left more than 268,000 homes and businesses without power across Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas as of late Thursday. The number of outages has decreased from a peak of over 939,000 on Tuesday, which affected several states from Texas to Kentucky.
Tornado-spawning thunderstorms swept through the Southern Plains and the Ozark Mountains over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, resulting in at least 21 fatalities across four U.S. states.
Texas: Power company Oncor, a unit of California-based Sempra Energy (NYSE)
reported the highest number of outages, with over 135,000 customers without power in the Dallas-Fort Worth area
Restoration Efforts: Oncor has restored power to over 500,000 customers so far. However, ongoing heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and flooding continue to pose challenges to the restoration efforts in several communities.
These severe weather events highlight the vulnerability of infrastructure to extreme weather conditions and the importance of robust disaster preparedness and response strategies.
