A. O. Smith (NYSE: AOS), one of the world's leading water heater and boiler manufacturers, traded at $59.22 when Stifel set a $59 price target. The target was $0.22, or approximately 0.4%, below that price. Stifel downgraded the stock from Buy to Hold, citing rising steel costs, higher interest rates, weak industry demand and uncertainty surrounding the company's China business.
A. O. Smith also manufactures water treatment and water management products. The company expects 2026 sales to grow 2%-3%. Second-quarter boiler sales increased 21% year over year, while full-year boiler sales are projected to grow 6%-8%. North American water treatment sales are expected to rise 5%-6%.
Leonard Valve, acquired for $470 million in January 2026, is expected to contribute approximately $70 million to 2026 sales. However, A. O. Smith expects its China sales to decline by a low-double-digit percentage in local currency. Long-term debt increased to $598 million from $112.7 million at the end of 2025, primarily because the Leonard Valve acquisition was financed with a new term loan.
A. O. Smith raised its quarterly dividend by 6% to $0.38 per share, equivalent to $1.52 annually. The dividend is payable on Nov. 16, 2026, to shareholders of record on Oct. 30. The increase extends the company's record of more than 30 consecutive years of annual dividend increases.
During the first half of 2026, A. O. Smith generated $233.3 million in free cash flow and spent $162.4 million repurchasing 2.6 million shares. Supported by stronger cash flow, the company increased its full-year share-repurchase target to $300 million from $200 million.
