Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-A:NYSE), under the strategic guidance of Warren Buffett, made a significant adjustment to its investment portfolio by reducing its stake in Apple during the first quarter of 2024. This decision to sell approximately 116 million shares, or nearly 13% of its Apple holdings, was a notable move, especially considering Apple's position as Berkshire's largest stock holding. The reduction was more aggressive than the 10 million-share cut in the previous quarter, aligning with Berkshire's strategy to bolster its cash reserves. By the end of the first quarter, the value of Berkshire's investment in Apple had decreased to about $135.4 billion, down from $174.3 billion at the end of 2023, reflecting the impact of Apple's stock price decline.
Despite this reduction, Warren Buffett expressed a strong belief in Apple's business model and future prospects. At Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meeting, Buffett highlighted Apple as an "even better business" compared to other significant investments like American Express and Coca-Cola. He remained optimistic about Apple's position in Berkshire's portfolio, suggesting it's "extremely likely" to remain the company's largest investment by the end of 2024. This confidence is supported by Berkshire Hathaway's financial performance, which saw a notable revenue growth of 47.21% in the recent quarter. However, it's important to note that while revenue surged, gross profit growth declined by 45.14%, indicating some challenges in profitability.
The strategic move to reduce Apple's stake also aligns with Berkshire Hathaway's broader financial strategy. The company aimed to increase its cash position, which stood at around $182.3 billion at the quarter's end, with expectations to grow to about $200 billion by the end of the second quarter. This approach is reflected in Berkshire's financial metrics, with a modest asset growth of 4.91% and a free cash flow growth of 3.90%. Additionally, the company's net income growth surged by an impressive 394.31%, despite a slight decrease in operating income growth by 6.26%, showcasing Berkshire's ability to generate significant profits and manage its resources effectively.
The partnership between Berkshire Hathaway and Apple remains strong, despite the reduction in shares. Both Warren Buffett and Apple CEO Tim Cook have expressed mutual respect and confidence in their ongoing relationship. This sentiment is crucial, especially as Apple navigates through challenges such as sluggish growth and declining sales in China. However, Apple's recent announcement of better-than-expected earnings for its fiscal second quarter, driven by strong performance in its Services business and a record $110 billion stock buyback program, has positively impacted its stock price.
Investors and market watchers are now keenly observing Berkshire Hathaway's investment moves and Apple's strategic initiatives. The launch of new iPad models and Apple's focus on artificial intelligence at its annual developers conference are anticipated events that could influence future growth trajectories. As Berkshire Hathaway continues to adjust its investment strategy, the financial community will closely monitor how these decisions align with the company's long-term growth objectives and market positioning.
