Futures linked to the Nasdaq tumbled on Monday as a new Chinese artificial intelligence model from DeepSeek caused a wave of selling in AI-related shares, with megacap stocks like Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) among the hardest hit.
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, recently released a free AI assistant that uses lower-cost chips and less data, claiming to provide a more efficient alternative to U.S.-based AI solutions. This move has sparked concerns that the growing popularity of DeepSeek's technology could disrupt the established AI supply chain, affecting everything from chipmakers to data centers.
As a result, Nvidia, often viewed as the poster child for AI-driven growth, saw a sharp drop of 6.9% in premarket trading. Other tech giants like AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) and Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) also saw significant losses of 3.7% and 6.4%, respectively.
The AI selloff extended beyond chipmakers, with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) all seeing notable declines. AI server makers Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) and Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) each slid by around 8%, contributing to a broader 1.96% drop in S&P 500 E-minis and a 3.04% drop in Nasdaq 100 E-minis.
As the DeepSeek AI Assistant soared to the top of the Apple App Store's free apps in the U.S., surpassing the widely used ChatGPT, investors are scrambling to assess the long-term implications of DeepSeek's competitive edge in the rapidly growing AI sector.
While analysts like Richard Hunter from Interactive Investor caution that it's “far too early” to consider DeepSeek as an existential threat to U.S. AI firms, the debut of a lower-cost, more efficient AI model has certainly ruffled feathers in the AI industry. Hunter noted that DeepSeek's sudden rise will likely “put the cat among the pigeons” as investors re-evaluate the potential impact on a sector that has driven much of the stock market's recent gains.
While the immediate selloff reflects the uncertainty surrounding DeepSeek's rapid ascension, it is clear that U.S.-based companies like Nvidia and Microsoft may need to reassess their strategies in response to DeepSeek's competitive pricing and innovation. The coming weeks may bring more volatility as investors digest the impact of DeepSeek's AI revolution on the broader AI ecosystem.
