Heartland Express (NASDAQ: HTLD) Q3 2026 Earnings Miss Estimates Amid Revenue Decline

  • Heartland Express (NASDAQ: HTLD) reported third-quarter revenue and earnings below analysts' estimates.
  • Revenue declined 8.7% year over year, but the company returned to profitability with net income of $1.0 million.
  • The operating ratio improved by 500 basis points to 98.7%, although the figure still indicates a relatively narrow operating margin.

Heartland Express (NASDAQ: HTLD), a truckload transportation company, reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $179.5 million and basic earnings of $0.01 per share.

Analyst estimates varied by data provider. Investing.com compared the results with estimated revenue of $181.94 million and EPS of $0.03. Zacks used consensus estimates of $188.77 million in revenue and EPS of $0.02, producing negative surprises of 4.91% and 50%, respectively.

Revenue declined 8.7% from $196.5 million in the same quarter last year. However, Heartland Express reported net income of $1.0 million, or $0.01 per share, compared with a net loss of $8.3 million, or $0.11 per share, in the third quarter of 2025.

The company's operating ratio improved to 98.7% from 103.7%, a decrease of 500 basis points. Its adjusted operating ratio was 97.6%, compared with 103.5% a year earlier. A lower operating ratio generally indicates improved efficiency, although a ratio close to 100% means that operating expenses still consume most operating revenue.

During the quarter, Heartland Express repurchased 183,371 shares for $2.2 million and paid $35 million toward acquisition-related debt. For the first nine months of 2026, the company reported revenue of $539.9 million, net income of $6.7 million and basic EPS of $0.09. It also made $59.9 million in debt and finance-lease payments during the nine-month period, reducing related obligations to $99.9 million.
