Roth Capital raises its price target for Chord Energy (NASDAQ:CHRD) to $165 from $145. Shares trade at $154.38 when the target is published, putting the new target about 6.9% above the share price. Chord Energy produces oil and natural gas, and its recent operating results provide context for the higher target in the dynamic energy sector.

Chord Energy’s preliminary third-quarter 2026 update shows oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production above the high end of its forecast, while capital spending stays within its planned range, as highlighted by PR Newswire. CEO Michael Lou credits stronger well performance and less downtime. Higher production and favorable selling prices also push adjusted free cash flow above expectations, demonstrating strong operational efficiency.

Chord Energy repurchases $205 million in shares during the quarter at an average of $135.74 per share. It buys another $44.3 million so far in the fourth quarter at an average of $142.32. These strategic share buybacks reduce the number of shares outstanding, giving remaining shareholders a larger stake in the company and boosting shareholder value.

The company also announces the sale of non-operated Marcellus assets for $550 million, including a $55 million deposit paid in the third quarter. As of September 30, Chord Energy holds $804.7 million in cash and cash equivalents against $1.48 billion in total debt. Lou becomes CEO on October 19, succeeding Danny Brown, marking a leadership transition for the energy producer.

Roth Capital’s $165 target sits below the $172 average target from 17 analysts, as highlighted by Defense World. Thirteen analysts rate Chord Energy a buy and four rate it a hold. Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley recently lower their targets to $174 and $169, respectively, while maintaining “overweight” ratings, reflecting varied analyst sentiment on the oil and gas stock outlook.
