John Hancock Tax-Advantaged Dividend Income Fund provides investors exposure to the utility sector and fixed-income investments. HTD has performed well recently and still offers an attractive discount to its NAV for investors. The fund's distribution yield is appealing and looks sustainable, with the potential for better performance helping support the payout.

John Hancock Tax-Advantaged Dividend Income Fund offers investors an 8.4% yield in a tax-friendly manner through preferred stocks and use of return of capital. HTD's exposure to the utilities sector presents some weakness amidst the higher interest rate environment. HTD currently trades at a discount to NAV of 9.33%, presenting an attractive entry point for investors looking to lock in high-yielding income.

John Hancock Tax-Advantaged Dividend Income Fund is back trading at an attractive relative and absolute discount. The HTD closed-end fund offers exposure to utility and fixed-income/preferred securities, which should perform well going forward after being beaten down by the higher-rate environment. HTD has delivered a steady monthly distribution, and while a distribution cut can never be 100% ruled out, I do suspect the payout is fairly safe for the time being.

The John Hancock Tax-Advantaged Dividend Income Fund offers a high level of current income with an 8.70% yield, higher than the S&P 500 Index and Alerian MLP Index. The fund focuses on common equities, particularly utility stocks, which provide stable cash flows and higher dividend yields. The fund's leverage ratio has improved but is still higher than ideal, and it has failed to fully cover its distribution over the past two years.

I have a total of 41 positions in my closed-end fund portfolio, with the top ten positions making up 36.52% of the portfolio. We have four new names making their way to my top ten list since the prior update, but three were already positions that have simply grown to be larger allocations. Closed-end funds overall look to be a place of opportunity as discounts remain historically wide across both equity and fixed-income-focused funds.

Total Return is the actual rate of return for an investment over a given evaluation period, typically one, three, five, or ten years. The Total NAV Return is the sum of all dividends/distributions, assuming they are reinvested, plus the change in the NAV of the fund, be it positive or negative. However, managing our portfolio is not only about applying financial rules, because it is not certain that dividends can and will always be reinvested.
