Recent data from Morgan Stanley reveals a remarkable surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales in China, outpacing internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) sales during the week. With EV penetration recovering to 45%, local brands have dominated the market, with BYD (SZ:002594) emerging as the clear leader.
BYD, a prominent player in the Chinese EV market, reported impressive weekly sales of 68,500 units, marking a significant 30% increase from the previous week. This surge in sales was largely driven by the strong performance of the Honor model's facelift, highlighting the brand's popularity among Chinese consumers.
Li Auto (NASDAQ:LI) also experienced a substantial jump in sales, with weekly figures soaring by 50% to approximately 8,000 units. The impressive growth can be attributed to the ramp-up of Li Auto's L6 model, which contributed 2,800 units to the overall sales volume.
Meanwhile, NIO witnessed a notable 23% week-over-week improvement in its sales rate, reaching 4,400 units. Effective sales promotions played a crucial role in driving consumer demand for NIO vehicles during the period.
In contrast, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) China faced a slight setback, with weekly sales declining by 11% to 9,800 units. Similarly, XPeng's sales remained relatively stagnant, hovering around the 2,300 unit mark.
Notably, AITO achieved remarkable sales figures, surpassing the 6,000 unit milestone. However, Xiaomi (OTC:XIACF) struggled to maintain momentum, selling only 1,100 units, likely impacted by supply bottlenecks.
The surge in EV sales underscores the growing demand for environmentally-friendly transportation options in China. As local brands continue to innovate and expand their product offerings, the Chinese EV market is poised for further growth and competition.
