Capital expenditure is often treated as a straightforward growth signal. A company investing heavily in data centers, compute capacity, logistics infrastructure, manufacturing assets, or other long-lived resources may appear to be preparing for future expansion. But higher capex does not automatically mean that capital is being deployed efficiently.

The more useful question is whether operating, cash-generation, and return outcomes are keeping pace with the scale of reinvestment. A company can continue growing revenue and operating profit while capital spending rises even faster. In that situation, absolute growth remains positive, but revenue, operating income, or operating cash flow relative to each dollar of capex may deteriorate.

This article evaluates that relationship using Claude with Financial Modeling Prep's MCP server. The analysis compares Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Amazon across FY2023-FY2025 using annual capex, revenue, operating income, operating cash flow, depreciation and amortization, and return on invested capital, or ROIC. A separate quarterly Owner Earnings diagnostic adds another perspective on cash generation.

The three companies are not strict operating peers. Amazon's retail, logistics, and AWS capital needs differ materially from the advertising, digital-platform, and data-center economics of Alphabet and Meta. The comparison therefore focuses primarily on how each company's outcomes changed relative to its own FY2023 reinvestment baseline.

Large infrastructure programs can take several years to mature. The analysis asks whether reported outcomes kept pace with reinvestment during the selected period; it does not establish that capital spending caused those outcomes or determine what the investments will ultimately earn.

Claude performs the comparison using predefined formulas, period-matching rules, classification thresholds, and missing-data treatment so that the assessment can be traced back to the underlying FMP inputs.

Building the Capex Efficiency Framework

The analysis compares Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), and Amazon (AMZN) across fiscal years 2023-2025. All three are large, cash-generative technology platforms undertaking substantial investment in computing capacity, data centers, and related long-lived assets. Their broader business models and capital requirements, however, differ considerably.

Each company is evaluated primarily against its own FY2023 baseline to determine whether operating, cash-generation, and return outcomes kept pace with reinvestment through FY2025. This approach avoids treating absolute capex ratios as directly comparable measures of inherent efficiency.

The same care is necessary when benchmarking financial ratios across companies: a common sector label does not make different business models economically interchangeable. Here, cross-company results show how the same tests behave across three businesses, without turning the output into a ranking.

All core comparisons use annual fiscal-period data. Capital expenditure is reported as a cash outflow in the cash flow statement, so its absolute value is used throughout the annual calculations.

Measuring Reinvestment Scale and Conversion

The framework separates the scale of reinvestment from the outcomes observed alongside it. Depreciation and amortization are abbreviated as D&A in the tables.

The three capex conversion ratios are evaluated as within-company trends from FY2023 to FY2025. This prevents positive revenue or profit growth from automatically receiving a favorable result when capital spending has increased substantially faster.

For example, revenue can continue to grow while Revenue-to-Capex declines if capital spending rises faster. Similarly, operating profit can increase in absolute terms while Operating-Income-to-Capex deteriorates. Operating cash flow adds a check on whether revenue growth is translating into cash generation.

These ratios compare company-wide results with current-period spending. They do not measure the output attributable to that year's investments. They also share the same capex denominator, so their movements should be read together rather than treated as three independent explanations of investment performance.

Capex Intensity and Capex-to-Depreciation provide context about the spending cycle. They help distinguish a relatively stable spending base from a period of substantial expansion.

Owner Earnings as a Consistent Supporting Measure

FMP returned Owner Earnings as fiscal-quarter observations in this analysis. The comparison therefore uses matched fiscal quarters for all three companies: Q4 FY2023 and Q4 FY2025, with Q4 FY2024 retained where available. It does not construct annual Owner Earnings values or use Owner Earnings divided by net income as a productivity test.

For each matched quarter, Owner Earnings Margin equals Owner Earnings divided by quarterly revenue, multiplied by 100.

This measure shows whether cash generation after estimated maintenance capex strengthened or weakened relative to revenue. FMP's Owner Earnings calculation combines operating cash flow with maintenance capex, retaining the negative sign used for capital spending. Maintenance capex is estimated under FMP's methodology; it should not be treated as a maintenance-spending figure disclosed directly by management.

A higher Owner Earnings Margin does not establish that current-period capex became more productive. The measure can also move because of operating cash flow, working-capital changes, and the maintenance-capex estimate. It supports interpretation but does not determine the final annual classification.

The diagnostic is Improved, Stable, Deteriorated, or Inconclusive. A change within 0.25 percentage points is treated as Stable. If either comparison quarter is unavailable or cannot be matched reliably, the diagnostic is Inconclusive.

Observed Capex-Efficiency Classification

The final classification uses four annual tests. Three measure operating or cash outcomes relative to capital spending, while the fourth measures broader returns on invested capital.

Calculations use unrounded source values. Rounded values are used only for presentation.

A lower value produces a FAIL when the test can be evaluated. If operating income is zero or negative at either comparison year, the operating-profit test is UNEVALUABLE. The same rule applies to operating cash flow for the cash-flow test.

Missing or conflicting inputs also prevent a reliable comparison. A required denominator of zero produces “Not meaningful,” and an unavailable or unmatched ROIC observation makes the return-conversion test UNEVALUABLE.

These are classifications under the specified screen. They describe the relationship between reported outcomes and reinvestment during FY2023-FY2025.

Investment-Cycle and Timing Context

Large technology, data-center, manufacturing, logistics, and infrastructure programs can require several years before their economic contribution becomes visible in reported results.

A decline in a conversion ratio during rapidly rising capex therefore does not establish that the underlying investments are uneconomic. It indicates that the measured operating or cash outcome did not keep pace with spending during the observation window.

The analysis reports changes in both Capex Intensity and Capex-to-Depreciation alongside the efficiency classification. When both measures increase between FY2023 and FY2025, the company receives an Active Expansion Cycle label.

That label is contextual. It adds or removes no PASS results, but it alerts the analyst that recent spending may have a longer realization period and that later fiscal years may be needed before drawing a stronger conclusion.

Confidence and Missing-Data Rules

Confidence refers to the completeness and period alignment of the data used to apply the four annual tests. It does not express confidence in future investment returns or in a causal explanation for the results.

Quarterly Owner Earnings does not determine this confidence level because it is a supporting diagnostic. Missing or conflicting quarterly observations remain visible in the results.

FMP Data Inputs and Access Through Claude MCP

The analysis uses four FMP datasets. Annual financial-statement and return data support the core FY2023-FY2025 classification, while Owner Earnings is handled separately at the fiscal-quarter level.

The Income Statement API provides annual revenue and operating income, plus matching quarterly revenue for the Owner Earnings Margin calculation. The Cash Flow Statement API provides capital expenditure, D&A, and operating cash flow.

Annual ROIC comes from the Key Metrics API. The Owner Earnings API supplies the quarterly Owner Earnings observations and the maintenance- and growth-capex estimates where returned.

The scale of reinvestment increased materially across all three companies. Alphabet's Capex Intensity rose from 10.49% to 22.70%, Meta's from 20.21% to 34.68%, and Amazon's from 9.17% to 18.39%.

Although revenue, operating income, and operating cash flow increased, those outcomes did not grow as quickly as capital spending. Revenue-to-Capex, Operating-Income-to-Capex, and Operating-Cash-Flow-to-Capex consequently declined for all three companies between FY2023 and FY2025.

ROIC followed a different pattern. Alphabet and Meta finished below their FY2023 levels, while Amazon remained above its starting point.

All four annual tests were evaluable for each company, producing High data confidence under the stated rules. The missing Amazon quarterly observation affects the supporting Owner Earnings series, not the completeness of the annual tests.

Reading the Classification

Alphabet fails all four annual tests. Revenue, operating income, and operating cash flow increased in absolute terms, but each declined relative to the substantially larger capex base. ROIC also ended FY2025 below its FY2023 level. The quarterly Owner Earnings diagnostic provides a positive cash-generation signal, but that supporting measure does not override the annual classification.

Meta also fails all four annual tests. Its Capex Intensity increased by 14.47 percentage points, while all three capex conversion ratios declined and FY2025 ROIC finished below FY2023. Its Q4 Owner Earnings Margin also declined modestly across the comparison period.

Amazon passes the ROIC test but fails the three capex conversion tests. Its ROIC increased from 8.23% in FY2023 to 10.70% in FY2025, while Revenue-to-Capex, Operating-Income-to-Capex, and Operating-Cash-Flow-to-Capex declined. Its quarterly Owner Earnings diagnostic also deteriorated.

Analyst Review: Capex Growth Is Only Half the Story

The comparison shows why rising capital expenditure should not be evaluated using absolute growth alone. Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon all increased revenue, operating income, and operating cash flow between FY2023 and FY2025. Capital spending increased faster, reducing the amount of revenue, operating profit, and operating cash flow reported relative to each dollar of capex.

The return evidence is less uniform. Amazon's ROIC remained above its FY2023 starting point, while Alphabet's and Meta's finished below theirs. The quarterly Owner Earnings evidence also differs, with Alphabet showing an improvement and the other two companies showing declines. These differences matter even though the annual classification is the same.

The next step is to follow the investments over a longer period and examine the operating evidence behind changes in the ratios. Tracking how cost lines affect operating margins can help distinguish changes in operating performance from depreciation and other expense pressures. A broader review of the durability of returns and cash generation can then place the capex results within a longer company history.
